Marine sampling at the Balleny Islands
Our first view of Young Island, the northern most point of the Balleny Islands, was misty, cold, windy and a little foreboding. It’s a spectacular, remote, inhospitable but stunningly beautiful area. At the North end of Young island, the cliffs overhang by imposing glaciers. Sea stacks are present....it made us think the bathymetry could be exciting - and our multi beam sonar indicated that there are similar stacks under the water.
We were able to do six trawls with the entire benthic team
